On a beautiful March day, much unlike the actual March day in 1865 marked by constant rain, re-enactors from several North Carolina units came together to present the Battle of Averasboro. Coincidentally, the battle was fought on the fifteenth and sixteenth of March, 1865, and the re-enactment was conducted on the same dates in 2008.
For almost an hour, units of infantry, calvary, and artillery battled it out on the Averasboro Battlefield, on the actual grounds where General McLaw's division held the left of the Confederate third line. A large crowd was in attendence to see the movements and firing of canon, rifles, and side arms.
Earlier in the day, a cavalry demonstration was held featuring a unit representing the First North Carolina Federals (there was also a First North Carolina Confederate, once more underlining the brother-against-brother nature of the Civil War).
As you can see by the many photos shown here, there were plenty of other things to see and do. War medicine and surgery presentations were conducted, along with sutlers, iron working, and other crafts. Entertainment by gospel and bluegrass groups was provided.
